History

The Samguk Sagi records that in the 19th year of King Gyeongdeok's reign (760), two bridges, Woljeonggyo and Chunyanggyo, were built over the Muncheon Stream (蚊川) south of the palace. The two bridges are thought to have been important routes linking the north and south sides of Wolseong, which the Muncheon cut apart. Woljeonggyo was washed away and lost in the Joseon era.

Excavation found 4 boat-shaped piers remaining in the riverbed, so the bridge is estimated to have been about 60m long. Burnt timber and roof-tile fragments turned up between the piers, so it is thought to have been a pavilion-style bridge with a tiled roof. After historical research, restoration began in 2008; the bridge itself was finished first in 2013, and the gate towers at both ends were completed in April 2018.

The bridge spans the river south of Gyochon Hanok Village. In the riverbed west of Gyeongju National Museum lies the site of its partner bridge, Chunyanggyo; 3 piers remain, and it is thought to have been about 55m long and 12m wide. The two bridge sites are evidence of the structure and building techniques of Unified Silla bridges.
