Highlights
History
Columnar joints are column-shaped vertical cracks that form in basaltic lava. They are said to form when thick lava of about 1,100 degrees Celsius flows out of a crater and shrinks as it cools quickly. Later, as waves wore away the coast, the columns that had been inside the lava were exposed as they are today.
The stone columns of Daepo Jusangjeolli Cliff run along the shore of Jungmun-dong and Daepo-dong in Seogwipo. As a geological resource where you can see both how lava solidifies and how waves have carved the coast, they became a natural monument in 2005.
Hexagonal stone columns, standing layer upon layer as if stacked into steps, wrap around the shore like a folding screen. Most of the columns stand upright, but in places they lie on their side, and they are packed so tightly together that they look like a sculpture. The lava surface is rough, but on the faces cut by the waves, column patterns show like a mural.
